How to Prepare for Black Friday 2026: The Complete Smart Shopper Checklist

Every year, as an online business owner myself, I look forward to Black Friday and Cyber Monday for two reasons.

First, as a shopper. It is the time of year when I stock up on the tools, software subscriptions and supplies my business runs on, often at prices I may not see again for another twelve months.

Second, and honestly the part I enjoy more, is sitting down with my clients, other online business owners, and helping them prepare to either spend smarter or sell better during one of the biggest shopping periods of the year.

That second part matters more than many people realise.

Most Black Friday content is written for shoppers looking for a deal on a television, phone or laptop. But if you run an online business, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are not simply opportunities to save money. They can also be opportunities to make more money, provided your business is properly prepared.

That is why this checklist is based on what I actually do myself and what I walk my clients through every year.

It covers both sides of Black Friday: how to prepare as a buyer and how to prepare as a seller.

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday, November 27, with Cyber Monday on Monday, November 30. And if you are planning to start thinking about either side of this on the morning of November 27, you are already behind.

The best deals can disappear quickly, while the best-prepared businesses are often running their promotions days or even weeks before Black Friday itself.

So, here is what I actually do, and what I tell my clients to do, weeks before the Black Friday rush begins.

Early Black Friday deals May begin weeks before November 27

Black Friday has increasingly expanded beyond one day. Retailers now run early deals, week-long promotions and extended campaigns, so waiting for November 27 is not necessarily the best strategy. Current 2026 retail coverage is already showing early Black Friday promotions appearing ahead of the official date.

1
1. Start With a Shopping List, Not a Shopping Mood

Before you visit any shopping website, write down what you actually need.

Separate your list into three categories:

Must Buy: Items you genuinely need.

Would Like: Products you have been considering but can live without.

Only If the Price Is Right: Items you will buy only if the discount is genuinely substantial.

This simple exercise can prevent one of Black Friday’s biggest traps: buying something merely because it is labelled “70% OFF”.

A discount is not a saving if you did not need the product in the first place.

2
2. Build Your Wishlist Early

Once you know what you want, create wishlists on the shopping platforms you intend to use.

Add the exact products rather than vague categories.

Don’t simply write:

“Laptop.”

Write:

“HP 15-inch laptop, Core i5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD.”

The more specific you are, the easier it becomes to compare prices.

Wishlists can also make it easier to spot price changes and prevent you from getting distracted by unrelated promotions.

Major e-commerce platforms already encourage shoppers to use wishlists and notifications during Black Friday campaigns.

3
3. Know the Price Before the Discount

This may be the single most important Black Friday rule.

Never judge a bargain by the percentage printed in large red numbers.

Judge it by the actual selling price.

For example:

A television is advertised as:

₦450,000 → ₦299,000

That looks like a major discount.

But what if the same television was selling for ₦300,000 in October?

You are not really saving ₦151,000.

You are saving roughly ₦1,000 compared with the price you could already have paid.

Consumer research has repeatedly found that some Black Friday “deals” are not the lowest prices available during the year. Which? found in its analysis of 175 products that 83% were available at the same price or cheaper outside the 2024 Black Friday sales period.

The rule:

Track the price before you trust the discount.

Compare the product’s recent history and check at least two or three competing retailers.

For Nigerian shoppers, price-comparison services such as CheckPrice.ng can also help compare prices across multiple local stores.

4
Set Your Budget Before the Sales Begin

Black Friday is designed to create urgency.

You will see messages such as:

“Only 2 left!”

“Sale ends in 10 minutes!”

“Buy now!”

Those messages are designed to speed up your decision.

Your answer should already have been decided.

Set:

A total Black Friday budget

A budget for each shopping category

A maximum price for your priority items

For example:

Category Maximum budget
Smartphone ₦400,000
Laptop ₦900,000
Home appliances ₦300,000
Clothing ₦150,000
Gifts ₦100,000

The exact figures will differ from person to person.

The important part is having the limit before the pressure begins.

5
5. Subscribe to Retailer Newsletters

Retailers often announce promotions to email subscribers before they become widely visible.

Sign up early for newsletters from the stores and brands you genuinely plan to use.

But do not subscribe to everything.

Filling your inbox with hundreds of promotions can make impulse buying worse.

Follow the stores that matter to your shopping list.

Compare at Least Three Sellers

Never assume that the first retailer offering a discount has the best deal.

For each expensive item, identify at least two or three sellers before Black Friday.

Compare:

Selling price

Shipping

Warranty

Return policy

Seller reputation

Payment options

A product that is ₦10,000 cheaper but comes from an unknown seller with no meaningful after-sales support may not actually be the better deal.

6
Check the Seller, Not Just the Product

This is particularly important when shopping through online marketplaces.

A recognised marketplace does not mean every individual seller is automatically trustworthy.

Check:

Seller ratings

Customer reviews

Number of completed orders

Return arrangements

Whether the seller is verified

Konga, for example, advises buyers to check seller ratings and reviews and notes that not every product on its marketplace is sold directly by Konga.

7
Be Extremely Careful With Social Media Deals

This deserves its own section because Black Friday attracts scammers.

Fraudsters know that shoppers are looking for bargains, which makes fake promotions an effective way to steal money and payment information.

Nigeria has already seen examples of fake social-media pages impersonating major retailers and advertising bogus Black Friday deals. Africa Check documented multiple Facebook pages impersonating Jumia and directing shoppers to fake promotions. Jumia told the fact-checkers that those pages were not affiliated with the company and advised customers to place orders directly through its official website or app.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has also warned Nigerians about fake online stores, scams, misrepresentation and exploitative conduct during Black Friday periods.

8
Red flags include:

A deal sent to you through an unsolicited DM

A Facebook or Instagram account pretending to be a major retailer

Requests to pay directly into a personal bank account

A website address that looks slightly different from the official retailer

Huge discounts that no other seller is offering

Pressure to pay immediately

When in doubt, close the message and visit the retailer’s official website yourself.

9
Never Let a WhatsApp Message Make the Decision for You

This deserves special attention in Nigeria.

A message can arrive saying:

“Jumia Black Friday 90% OFF! Click now!”

or:

“Last 10 iPhones available. Pay now to reserve.”

Do not use the message as your shopping destination.

Open your browser or official shopping app yourself.

Then search for the product there.

This simple habit can protect you from fake links, impersonation scams and fraudulent payment requests.

10
Check the Return and Warranty Policy

A cheap product is not necessarily a good purchase.

Before buying electronics, appliances, clothing or other expensive products, check:

Can I return it?

How many days do I have?

Who pays return shipping?

What happens if it arrives damaged?

Does it have a manufacturer’s warranty?

Is the seller authorised to sell the brand?

These questions become especially important when buying expensive electronics.

11
Choose Your Payment Method Carefully

Use secure payment methods offered directly through the retailer or trusted marketplace.

Avoid sending money to an individual’s personal account simply because someone promises a larger discount.

Konga’s buyer-safety guidance, for example, recommends using its official checkout and warns buyers using Pay on Delivery not to pay sellers directly before receiving an order.

The principle is simple:

Do not let a discount become a reason to abandon normal payment safety.

12
Create a “Buy” and “Walk Away” Price

This is a powerful strategy.

Before Black Friday, decide:

Buy price: The price at which you are happy to purchase.

Walk-away price: The price above which you will leave the product.

For example:

Target phone

Normal price: ₦450,000

Buy price: ₦360,000 or below

Walk-away price: Above ₦400,000

When the sale starts, you do not need to debate emotionally.

You already know your answer.

13
Don’t Assume the Biggest Discount Is the Best Deal

A 10% discount on an excellent product at a competitive market price can be better than a 60% discount on an overpriced product.

Consider this:

Offer “Original” price Sale price Claimed discount
Deal A ₦500,000 ₦400,000 20%
Deal B ₦800,000 ₦440,000 45%
Deal C ₦1,000,000 ₦450,000 55%

Deal C looks the most exciting.

But if the product normally sells for ₦430,000 elsewhere, Deal A or B may actually represent better value.

Look at the final price, not the size of the red percentage.

Watch for “Black Friday Versions”

Some products sold during major shopping events may have different model numbers, specifications or bundles.

This is especially important with:

Televisions

Laptops

Smartphones

Headphones

Home appliances

Compare the exact model number and specifications rather than assuming two products are identical because they look similar.

14
Prepare Your Accounts Before Black Friday

If you already know where you intend to shop, make sure your account is ready.

Check:

Delivery address

Phone number

Email address

Payment method

Account password

Two-factor authentication

This saves valuable time when limited-stock offers appear.

It also reduces the temptation to make hurried decisions because you are struggling with account or payment details.

15
Decide Which Deals Actually Matter

Not every Black Friday promotion deserves your attention.

Prioritise items where the potential saving is meaningful.

For example:

Laptop: worth tracking

Refrigerator: worth tracking

Phone you’ve already planned to buy: worth tracking

Random ₦3,000 gadget you never wanted: probably not

The best Black Friday shopping session is usually not the one where you buy the most.

It is the one where you get the right products at genuinely good prices.

Your Black Friday 2026 Preparation Checklist

By the time Black Friday week arrives, you should have completed this:

Task Done?
Black Friday date marked ✅
Wishlist created ✅
Target products identified ✅
Normal prices recorded ✅
Prices checked across multiple stores ✅
Buy/walk-away prices decided ✅
Budget fixed ✅
Retailer newsletters followed ✅
Seller ratings checked ✅
Return policies reviewed ✅
Warranty checked ✅
Payment method prepared ✅
Official retailer websites bookmarked ✅
Scam warning signs understood ✅

The Final 24-Hour Checklist

The night before Black Friday, do not start shopping from scratch.

Open your shortlist.

Check the latest prices.

Confirm the seller.

Confirm the return policy.

Confirm your budget.

Charge your phone or laptop.

Make sure your internet connection is reliable.

Then wait.

When the deal appears, compare it against the price you recorded earlier.

If it is genuinely good, buy it.

If it is not, walk away.

Black Friday in Nigeria: Don’t Forget Delivery Costs

Nigerian shoppers should pay particular attention to the final checkout price.

A product advertised at ₦100,000 may become ₦110,000 or more after delivery, service fees or other charges.

Therefore, compare:

Product price + delivery + applicable fees = actual cost

Do not compare headline prices alone.

Also check whether the seller delivers to your location and how long delivery is expected to take.

What If You Miss the Black Friday Deal?

Do not panic.

One of the biggest psychological traps surrounding Black Friday is the feeling that “this is my only chance.”

Research suggests that this is often not true.

Which? found that many products promoted during Black Friday were available at the same price or cheaper at another point during the year. In its 2024 analysis, 83% were available at the same price or cheaper outside the Black Friday sales period.

So if the price is not good enough, waiting can be the smarter decision.

The Smartest Black Friday Shopper Is Not the Fastest

Black Friday rewards preparation more than panic.

The shopper who knows the product, knows its normal price, knows the seller, knows the budget and knows the walk-away point has a major advantage over the person simply scrolling from deal to deal.

And this year, there is another reason to be careful.

As Black Friday becomes increasingly digital, the competition is no longer only between shoppers trying to secure limited stock.

Scammers are competing for your money too.

That means the real Black Friday skill is not finding the biggest discount.

It is recognising the difference between a genuine bargain and an expensive mistake.

Conclusion: Prepare First, Shop Second

Black Friday 2026 arrives on November 27, but smart shopping should begin long before then.

Build your wishlist.

Track prices.

Compare sellers.

Set your budget.

Check return policies.

Secure your payment method.

And above all, do not allow a flashing discount banner to make financial decisions for you.

There will be thousands of deals.

You do not need thousands of them.

You only need the right ones.

So when November 27 arrives, don’t ask:

“What can I buy?”

Ask:

“What did I plan to buy, and is this actually a good price?”

That is how to make Black Friday 2026 work for you.

Editorial Note

Black Friday promotions, prices, product availability and retailer policies can change quickly. Always verify the final price, seller, delivery cost, return terms and payment details at checkout before completing a purchase.
