WAFCON 2026 Quarter-Finals: Full Fixtures, Kick-off Times, Qualified Teams and What Every Result Means

The group stage is over. The knockout rounds are here.

Sixteen teams began the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on July 26. Eight of them are still standing. Two weeks of group stage football, 24 matches, historic upsets, dramatic tiebreakers and six-goal scorelines have reduced the field to the eight nations who genuinely deserve to be competing for continental glory and a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The quarter-finals begin today, Saturday, August 8, and continue tomorrow, Sunday, August 9. Four matches. Four World Cup places available. The most important 48 hours of football in African women’s football in 2026.

Here is everything you need to know.

WHAT IS AT STAKE: WINNER VS LOSER

This is the part that every football fan in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Malawi needs to understand clearly before tomorrow’s matches.

Outcome What Happens Next
✅ WIN Semi-final place confirmed. AUTOMATIC qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. No further qualification matches needed.
❌ LOSE Eliminated from WAFCON 2026 title race. But NOT automatically out of World Cup. The four losing quarter-finalists play two African play-off matches on August 13 in Casablanca. The two play-off winners then enter the FIFA inter-confederation play-offs for a further World Cup chance.

The direct, guaranteed, clean route to Brazil 2027 ends at the quarter-final stage. Win tomorrow, and you are going to the World Cup. Lose and you face a longer, harder road with no guarantees.

THE PLAY-OFF BRACKETS: FIXED BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT

This is something many fans do not realise. The inter-confederation play-off brackets were set before WAFCON 2026 even began. The losing quarter-finalists do not draw new opponents. The pairings were pre-determined based on which groups they came from.

The African play-off ties were fixed before the tournament began. The losers of Morocco vs South Africa play the losers of Ivory Coast vs Algeria on August 13 in Casablanca. The other August 13 play-off match pits the losers of Cameroon vs Nigeria against the losers of Malawi vs Ghana.

What this means for Nigeria specifically: if the Super Falcons lose to Cameroon tomorrow, they will face either Malawi or Ghana in the African play-off on August 13. Not a North African team. Their own West and Southern African rivals from the group stage. That is not a comfortable draw. Both Malawi and Ghana are teams Nigeria have already faced in this tournament.

The strongest incentive of all remains the direct one. Win tomorrow. Go to Brazil. Simple.

EACH MATCH IN ONE SENTENCE

Ivory Coast vs Algeria (Today 18:00 WAT): The tournament’s most attack-minded side against its most defensively disciplined side. Ivory Coast have scored eight goals in the group stage; Algeria have conceded only one. Something has to give.

Morocco vs South Africa (Tonight 21:00 WAT): A rematch of the 2022 WAFCON final, which South Africa won 2-1 in Rabat on Moroccan soil. Morocco topped Group A with seven points and zero goals conceded. South Africa arrive as defending champions with a point to prove.

Cameroon vs Nigeria (Tomorrow 18:00 WAT): The standout match of the quarter-final weekend. The winner books a place in the semi-finals and an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Two of Africa’s most decorated women’s football nations. Nigeria, the ten-time champions. Cameroon are unbeaten in the group stage, with Marie Manga firing on all cylinders.

Malawi vs Ghana (Tomorrow 21:00 WAT): The fairytale against the experienced campaigners. Malawi are in their first-ever WAFCON and already in the quarter-finals after topping Group C. Ghana are three-time WAFCON runners-up looking to finally go all the way.

THE EIGHT TEAMS ELIMINATED AT GROUP STAGE

For the record, these eight nations have already ended their WAFCON 2026 campaigns: 🇿🇲 Zambia, 🇪🇬 Egypt, 🇨🇻 Cape Verde, 🇸🇳 Senegal, 🇰🇪 Kenya, 🇹🇿 Tanzania, 🇲🇱 Mali and 🇧🇫 Burkina Faso.

Zambia’s elimination remains the most debated of the tournament. They won two of three group matches and scored eight goals, including a famous 6-0 demolition of Egypt. Barbra Banda scored five tournament goals. They were eliminated on the CAF head-to-head tiebreaker, having collected zero points in matches against the other two teams on six points, Nigeria and Malawi.
