Online application portals were slow to load. Uploading documents, filling forms, and tracking deadlines across different time zones felt like an obstacle course designed for people with faster connections and better infrastructure.
I remember that frustration clearly. The feeling of seeing an opportunity, wanting it badly, starting the process, and then hitting a wall somewhere along the way.
But things have changed dramatically. The information age has caught up with Nigeria in a way that would have felt unimaginable back then. Today, a student in Maiduguri, Onitsha, Sokoto, or Calabar with a smartphone and decent data can access and complete scholarship applications that were practically unreachable for my generation. The opportunities are real. The technology is accessible. What my generation lacked, yours now has.
One important note before we get into the list. Every scholarship below has been verified as current and active as of May to June 2026. Some are open right now with urgent deadlines. Others have closed for this cycle but open again later in 2026, which means you can begin preparing today. The status of each one is clearly stated so you know exactly where you stand.
1Fulbright Foreign Student Program — United States
Status: OPEN NOW — deadline June 1, 2026
This one is urgent. If you qualify, you need to be applying this week.
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is funded by the US Department of State and is specifically designed to support Nigerian doctoral researchers who want to conduct advanced research at American universities. It is not a general postgraduate scholarship. It targets PhD students already enrolled in Nigerian universities who want to spend time conducting their doctoral research in the United States.

Who can apply: Nigerian citizens currently enrolled as PhD students at Nigerian universities who have completed a significant portion of their doctoral programme. Your home institution must formally approve your participation. You need a TOEFL score of at least 90, strong academic performance, and a clear original research proposal. Masters and first-degree holders do not qualify for this particular programme.

2Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program — United States

This is a separate Fulbright programme from the one above and it targets a different audience. The Fulbright African Research Scholar Programme offers Nigerian university faculty and administrators the opportunity to conduct advanced research or curriculum development at US institutions for three to nine months.
What it covers: Full research support, a living allowance, round-trip travel, and health insurance. Grants begin no earlier than August 2026.
Who can apply: Senior faculty or administrators at select Nigerian universities and research institutes. You must be a Nigerian citizen with strong academic credentials and three letters of reference. Clinical medical research involving direct patient contact is excluded. The programme is open to all other academic disciplines.
The application deadline is June 30, 2026.

3PTDF In-Country Scholarship — Nigeria
Status: OPEN NOW — deadline May 29 to June 5, 2026
This is one of the most urgent opportunities in this entire list and it is being underutilised by eligible students.
The Petroleum Technology Development Fund scholarship is administered directly by the Nigerian Federal Government and targets undergraduate and postgraduate students studying oil and gas-related disciplines at accredited Nigerian universities. What makes the 2026 PTDF scholarship particularly significant is what it offers: up to 700,000 naira annually for postgraduate students and a free laptop, making it one of the most financially meaningful domestic scholarships available in Nigeria today.
The application portal opened on April 20, 2026 and closes on May 29 to June 5, 2026 depending on the specific programme. If you are studying in an eligible field, there is no reason not to apply right now.
What it covers: Tuition support, annual grants of up to 700,000 naira for postgraduate students and approximately 500,000 naira for undergraduates, plus a laptop.
Who can apply: Nigerian students in 200 level and above for undergraduates, or postgraduate students admitted into accredited Nigerian public universities in engineering, sciences, and oil and gas-related fields. You must have a NIN to apply.

4MEXT Scholarship — Japan
Status: OPEN — embassy deadline approximately May to June 2026
Japan is one of the most underrated scholarship destinations among Nigerian students, and it is also one of the most generous. The Japanese Government’s MEXT scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation in university residence halls, a monthly living allowance, and full round-trip airfare from Nigeria to Japan. No repayment is required at any stage.
The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria is currently accepting applications for the MEXT Teacher Training Students category. For the research student and graduate categories, African embassies have generally set their 2027 intake deadlines between late May and early June 2026.
What it covers: Full tuition, accommodation, monthly stipend, and return flights.
Who can apply: Nigerians with strong academic records applying through the Japanese Embassy in Abuja. Knowledge of Japanese language is not mandatory for most programmes. The scholarship covers undergraduate, Master’s, PhD, and research student tracks depending on the application category chosen.

5Chinese Government Scholarship — CSC — China

China has quietly become one of the top study destinations for Nigerian students, and the Chinese Government Scholarship through the China Scholarship Council is a fully funded programme that covers tuition, accommodation, and a monthly allowance of up to 3,500 yuan at over 280 Chinese universities.
The 2026 intake application period ran from December 2025 to April 2026. The next cycle for the 2027 intake will open in December 2026. If you missed this cycle, begin building your application now. Strong candidates typically need several months to prepare a competitive research plan, gather transcripts, and obtain recommendation letters.
What it covers: Full tuition waiver, free university accommodation, basic health insurance, and a monthly living allowance of 2,500 to 3,500 yuan depending on your academic level.
Who can apply: Nigerian citizens with a good academic record at the relevant degree level. Masters and PhD applicants need a previous degree. Undergraduate applicants need WAEC or equivalent. Most programmes are available in English, particularly in medicine, engineering, and technology.

6DAAD Scholarship — Germany

The DAAD, German Academic Exchange Service, is the world’s largest scholarship organisation and offers multiple programmes for Nigerian applicants annually.
The In-Country/In-Region programme for Sub-Saharan Africa closed in April 2026. The main overseas DAAD scholarship cycle for Masters and PhD study in Germany opens later in 2026. Given that processing takes approximately six months, candidates who want to be ready for the next opening should begin gathering their documents, writing their motivation letter, and shortlisting German universities now.
What it covers: Monthly stipend, health insurance, tuition coverage, and travel allowance. Germany’s public universities charge little to no tuition for international students, which makes the DAAD stipend go significantly further than equivalent amounts in the UK or US.
Who can apply: The requirements vary by programme, but most DAAD scholarships require a completed first degree with strong academic results awarded no more than six years before the deadline. No age restriction applies. Language requirements depend on the programme: some are taught in English, others require German proficiency.

The 2026/2027 Chevening application cycle is now closed and results will be announced in June 2026. The next application window opens in August 2026 for the 2027/2028 intake.
This means that if you are serious about Chevening, the preparation window is right now — not August. The Nigerians who win Chevening do not start preparing when the portal opens. They start months before. They are strengthening their leadership roles, documenting the impact of their work, shortlisting their three UK university courses, drafting their essays, and booking IELTS tests so the results are ready before the window opens.
What it covers: Full tuition, monthly living allowance, return flights to the UK, visa fees, and arrival and departure allowances.
Who can apply: Nigerian citizens with at least two years of full-time work experience equivalent to 2,800 hours, a first degree equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours, and a commitment to return to Nigeria for at least two years after completing the scholarship.

8Commonwealth Scholarship — United Kingdom
Status: OPEN — 2026/2027 cycle active

The scholarship carries a strong development focus and requires applicants to demonstrate clearly how their proposed study will contribute to Nigeria’s growth and development.
What it covers: Full tuition, a living allowance, return airfare to the UK, and a thesis grant for research students.
Who can apply: Nigerian citizens with a good first degree, typically a second class upper or better, who cannot afford to study in the UK without financial support. This scholarship is specifically designed for candidates without independent financial means, which makes it one of the most accessible funded routes to UK study for Nigerians from ordinary backgrounds.

Nigerians are eligible to apply as Third Country Nationals and several programmes currently have open or rolling application windows. Some Erasmus Mundus programmes in AI, imaging, global studies, and sustainability accepted applications up to May and June 2026. The broader next cycle for programmes starting September 2027 is expected to open in October 2026.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is one of the most important scholarship opportunities available to young Nigerians from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and it is one of the least understood. It is not a single scholarship with one application. It is a programme that operates through a network of partner universities, each of which manages its own application process and timeline.
Partner institutions include the University of Toronto in Canada, Cornell University and other institutions in the United States, and leading African universities including Makerere University in Uganda. Each partner university posts its own Mastercard Foundation scholarship openings with their own deadlines throughout the year.
What it covers: Full tuition, accommodation, a monthly living stipend, transportation, mentorship, leadership development programming, and career support after graduation.
Who can apply: Academically talented young Nigerians from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to giving back to their communities and to Africa. You apply directly through the partner university where you wish to study, not through a central Mastercard Foundation portal.

The Honest Advice That Most Scholarship Guides Leave Out
The biggest mistakes Nigerians make when applying for scholarships are not missing a deadline or submitting the wrong document. The biggest mistake is applying at the last minute with a generic application that looks exactly like ten thousand others.
Scholarship committees read thousands of applications from people with good grades and relevant experience. What separates winners from the rest is a personal statement that is specific, honest, and tells a story that only that person could tell. Not a story about how you have always wanted to help Nigeria. A story about a specific moment that shaped your direction, a specific problem you are trying to solve, and a specific way that this scholarship will move you closer to solving it.
The second biggest mistake is applying to only one scholarship at a time and waiting for a result before starting the next one. Prepare for multiple applications simultaneously. Each essay takes weeks to write well. Start all of them together.
The technology barrier that tripped up my generation is gone. The information is freely available. The application portals work. What remains is preparation, honesty, and the willingness to start early.
