Top 10 Players to Watch at the 2026 World Cup

Every World Cup produces new heroes, breakout stars, and moments that people quote for the rest of their lives. The goals that get replayed for decades. The individual performances that redefine what we think is possible in football. The players who arrive as prospects and leave as legends.

But heading into 2026, there are already players the entire football world cannot stop watching closely. Because this tournament is carrying something extra that most World Cups do not carry.

Two of the greatest players in the history of the sport are expected to bow out on the biggest stage. A generation of young stars is poised to announce themselves as the definitive names of the next decade. And in between those two stories, a collection of in-their-prime players at the absolute peak of their abilities are hunting for the one trophy that defines a career above all others.

Here are the 10 players who will define the 2026 World Cup.

1
Kylian Mbappe — France

There is a specific burden that comes with being the best player in the world at a World Cup. Every expectation lands on your shoulders. Every defeat becomes your fault. Every trophy becomes your destiny.

Mbappe carries that burden and he has been carrying it since he was 19 years old. He won the World Cup with France in 2018. He scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final, becoming only the second player in history to score three goals in a World Cup final after Geoff Hurst in 1966, and still finished on the losing side as Argentina won on penalties.

He is 27 now. He is at Real Madrid. He is the most complete forward in world football right now. The 2026 World Cup is the tournament where Kylian Mbappe either confirms his place among the all-time greats or carries the weight of a second final defeat into the remainder of his career.

France are among the favourites. Mbappe is the reason.

2
Erling Haaland — Norway

This is Haaland’s first World Cup. Let the significance of that settle. The most devastating striker in world football, a man who scored over 300 goals at club level before the age of 25 and who carries 55 international goals in just 49 appearances for Norway, has never stood on a World Cup pitch until now.

Norway last appeared at the tournament in 1998. That is 28 years. An entire generation of Norwegian football passed without this moment.

At 6 feet 5 inches of pure physical intensity, with finishing ability that makes even experienced goalkeepers look helpless, Haaland arrives in North America as arguably the most lethal forward in the entire tournament. Whether Norway have enough around him to go deep is a legitimate question. But in terms of individual threat, there is nobody scarier to face in a knockout match.

He was 16 years old when he lit up the 2024 European Championship. He had not turned 17 until the eve of the final that Spain won. He became the youngest-ever scorer at a men’s Euros. He was the Ballon d’Or runner-up in 2025.

At 18, Lamine Yamal arrives at the 2026 World Cup as arguably the most naturally gifted young player in world football right now. He is drawing comparisons to Messi, which is the highest comparison football offers. There is even a famous photograph of Messi holding Yamal as a baby at a charity event years before either of them could have imagined this moment.

Spain are serious contenders for the tournament. Yamal is why they have been compared to the best Spain teams in the sport’s history. If he delivers here, there will be no argument left about who the next defining player in world football is.

What do you say about Messi at this point that has not already been said?

He won the World Cup in Qatar four years ago and completed football. At 38 years old, what is expected to be his sixth and final World Cup appearance carries an emotional weight that even casual football observers can feel. Watching Messi play is watching one of the greatest individual achievements in the history of sport, and the number of times that can happen is now a small and declining number.

Argentina are the defending champions. Messi, even at 38, remains their most important player. Whether he can do it again, in what is almost certainly his final tournament, is the central human narrative of the entire competition.

Watch every minute of Messi at this World Cup. Whatever happens, it is almost certainly the last time.

5
Jude Bellingham — England

Bellingham is 22 years old and he is already being compared to Zinedine Zidane by people who watched Zidane play. He is described as one of the most complete midfielders in world football. He led Real Madrid to the Champions League and drove England to the Euro 2024 final.

For England, who have been searching for the player capable of carrying them to a major trophy since 1966, Bellingham represents the closest thing to genuine belief that this generation has produced. He has the technical ability, the physical presence, the leadership, and the mental temperament to perform on the biggest stages.

If England win this World Cup, and they have the squad to do it, Bellingham will be the defining reason.

6
Cristiano Ronaldo — Portugal

At 41 years old, Ronaldo is competing in what is certainly his final World Cup. He is one goal away from breaking the all-time international scoring record. He has been at six World Cups for Portugal and the tournament has never produced the moment his career deserved on the international stage.

This is the last chance. Portugal have a squad capable of competing. Ronaldo, even at this stage, is a player capable of scoring in any match from any position. The hunger has not left him.

Watching him walk onto a World Cup pitch for what is almost certainly the final time is a moment that deserves to be acknowledged regardless of your opinion of him.

7
Vinicius Junior — Brazil

Brazil need Vinicius at his absolute best to win this tournament. At his best, he is unplayable. The combination of pace, skill, directness, and finishing that he produces in full flow is as exciting as anything in world football.

Brazil have not won a World Cup since 2002. The pressure of that expectation and the weight of what Brazil means in football globally makes every tournament a defining moment for their best players. Vinicius carries that weight in 2026.

A fully motivated, fully fit Vinicius Junior at a World Cup he genuinely wants to win is one of the tournament’s most compelling prospects.

8
Mohamed Salah — Egypt

Salah has won almost everything there is to win at club level. What his career is still missing is a significant achievement with Egypt at a major tournament.

He arrives at 33 years old for what may well be his final World Cup appearance. Egypt qualified with a dominant campaign. In a tournament with 48 teams and a more accessible knockout route, Salah and Egypt have a realistic path to the knockout stages.

If he is in form, a match where Salah is at his best remains one of the most entertaining prospects in the tournament regardless of the opponent.

9
Jamal Musiala — Germany

At 22, Musiala is one of the most naturally gifted players in world football. He glides between defenders, sees passes others cannot imagine, and makes football look genuinely effortless in a way that very few players achieve at any level.

Germany have rebuilt their squad around Musiala and Florian Wirtz, and their combination in midfield is arguably the most exciting pairing at this entire tournament. Germany have not won a World Cup since 2014. If they are going to end that wait, Musiala will be the heartbeat of the campaign.

10
Pedri — Spain

Spain have so much talent that a player as exceptional as Pedri barely gets enough attention. He is 23 years old and has already established himself as one of the best midfielders in world football. His combination with Yamal and the Spanish squad around him makes Spain one of the most technically complete teams in the tournament.

Pedri controls the tempo of games the way very few players can. In a World Cup where Spain have genuine aspirations of lifting the trophy for the second time in their history, Pedri is the quiet conductor that makes the orchestra work.

Fifty-three days of football. One hundred and four matches. One trophy. These ten players and their performances will determine what we remember about this tournament for the rest of our lives.

The World Cup starts on June 11. Do not miss a minute of it.
